A Sensing, Communication and Computing Approach for Vulnerable Road Users Safety

Most fatal road accidents in urban areas involve vulnerable users. New solutions for fighting against these can be considered by leveraging connected, intelligent vehicles and smart cities connecting all parts of an environment. This work proposes a multi-sensing communication approach to prevent potential between VRUs, predicting notifying both about collisions before they happen. leverages aggregates information from city sensors, dispersed the (and aggregated On-Board Units, OBUs), VRUs (e.g., smartphones smartwatches), on itself (e.g. video cameras, radars, lidars). These elements communicate through several message standards wireless access technologies ITS-G5, C-V2X, LTE, 5G and, future, 6G). Using sensing communication, fusion collision detection algorithms, this system predicts notifies hazardous situations involving Vulnerable Road User (VRU)s vehicles. The results real scenario with show that high accuracy low delay. Results also point some vital deployment decisions must made ensure proper notification timings, such as usage multi-homing, edge computing.
